Although it might be hard to believe it when you step outside this week, January is typically the coldest month of the year for us along the Texas coast, and often a wetter one. Plant growth slows way down, daylight is short, and the soil is doing important, quiet work beneath the surface. This is a rest period - and that rest is necessary. Roots need this time to do some of their metabolic magic, and they don’t need us driving and stomping all over them, let alone drowning or buzz-cutting them. January isn’t about pushing growth. It’s about protecting roots, preserving soil structure, and allowing systems below ground to rest - so spring growth arrives strong, balanced, and resilient rather than stressed and shallow. Our first treatments of 2026 will begin in late February and early March, once soil temperatures are warm enough for biology to do its job. Applying treatments before that point can be more hopeful than helpful. This winter pause respects the soil’s need to rest. We use this time to prepare, so that when spring starts to stir, we’re ready to return to the field and continue building healthy soil from the ground up.
