Spring Starts Below the Surface

Spring is underway, and we’re getting treatments rolling across our routes. As some of you already know, I recently dealt with a health issue that delayed our start this season. We appreciate your patience as we get fully caught up.

April is when spring really starts to show up across Houston—lawns green up, trees leaf out, and everything feels ready to take off. With a warmer-than-usual winter and some recent rainfall, we’re already seeing an early push of top growth in many landscapes.

But looks can be deceiving.

While things are waking up above ground, the soil is still catching up. Even with some much-needed rain this past weekend, moisture has been inconsistent (Houston is currently behind on rainfall by as much as 6” in some parts of town), and root systems are just beginning to rebuild. This is the time of year when it’s easy to get ahead of the soil—and that can lead to stress later, especially when heat and drought settle in.

That’s why we’re not rushing to push nitrogen and phosphorus. Early, overly lush growth—especially with cool nights and intermittent moisture—can invite fungal issues, weeds, and pests. Experience has proven to us that getting the foundation right now helps avoid problems later in the season.

April is all about timing. When soil, roots, and biology move together, everything that follows becomes easier. When growth gets ahead of that system, problems tend to show up later in the season.

We’re watching conditions closely and adjusting based on what your soil actually needs. If you have questions about watering, dry spots, or areas that struggled last year, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Spring: Foundation First

Our April applications are focused on activating soil biology, improving structure, and supporting deeper rooting, without forcing rapid top growth.

These treatments are designed to:

• Improve the soil’s ability to hold and move water through increased organic matter

• Feed beneficial microbes that help naturally cycle nutrients

• Prepare your landscape for the heat and dry conditions ahead

This is the foundation for a healthier, more resilient growing season.

Tips for April

Watering

As temperatures rise, it’s tempting to water more often. But in most cases, less frequent and deeper watering is better. Let the soil surface dry between cycles to encourage deeper roots. Overwatering now can lead to shallow rooting and more stress later.

Mowing

Grass may be greening up, but aggressive mowing can undo winter root recovery. Continue mowing high for now. Taller grass shades the soil surface, reduces evaporation, and protects developing roots.

Traffic and Compaction

Soils can still be soft this time of year, especially after recent rain. Try to limit heavy foot traffic or equipment use when the ground is wet. Preserving soil structure now helps your landscape perform better as temperatures rise.

Expectations

As I mentioned earlier, you may not see explosive top growth right away, and that’s intentional. Our focus is below the surface. As soil biology and root systems strengthen, the visible results will follow in a more stable, lasting way.
