August Reveals What Healthy Soil Can Do

Well, here we are—the hottest stretch of the Texas summer.

Triple-digit temperatures have arrived, and the forecast suggests they're here to stay for a while. Fortunately, thanks to an unusually wet June and scattered rainfall through July, many landscapes are entering August with more moisture in the soil than we've seen in recent summers. That's a real advantage, but now the challenge becomes holding onto it.

Healthy soil works like a sponge. It absorbs rainfall, stores it within the spaces created by roots and healthy soil structure, then gradually releases that moisture back to plants as the weather turns hot and dry. Compacted soils often do the opposite, allowing water to run off during heavy rains before quickly becoming hard and dry.

Everything we've done since early spring has been invested in helping your soil carry your landscape through the hottest weeks of summer. August is when those investments begin to matter most.

What We’re Focused on in August

August isn't usually the month to push for lush, rapid growth. Lawns, trees, and the rest of our landscapes are already working hard to manage the summer heat.

Throughout the spring and early summer, we've applied moderate amounts of nitrogen, but never on its own. Each treatment has also included living biology, humic materials, liquid fish, seaweed, and other ingredients that help improve soil structure, support nutrient cycling, and encourage steady, healthy growth rather than a quick flush of green that's more vulnerable to stress and pests.

As we move through August, our focus shifts from encouraging growth to supporting resilience. We're helping plants maintain healthy roots, efficient nutrient cycling, and strong metabolic function so they can better withstand prolonged heat and drought stress. A healthy landscape isn't simply one that's growing quickly. It's one that's prepared to continue performing until cooler weather returns.

Clay’s Tips for August

Watering

For some properties, Tropical Storm Bertha delivered a welcome inch or so late last month. Others received less, and some received much, much more. That's a good reminder that summer watering decisions shouldn't be based on the calendar, or even the weather forecast. A quick look below the surface will tell you far more than a passing rain shower ever can.

Rather than watering by the calendar, pay attention to your own landscape. If the soil is dry several inches below the surface and the grass isn't recovering by the following morning, it's probably time for a deep watering. One thorough soaking is still better than a light watering every day.

If the grass begins losing color or the blades fold inward during extended heat, consider increasing the run time on your regular watering days or adding an extra watering day to the week. Watering during the early morning, just before sunrise, remains the most effective time.

Don't Panic: Afternoon Wilt is Normal

During August, when afternoon temperatures are pushing 100 degrees or more, it's perfectly normal for healthy plants to look tired late in the day. Before adjusting your watering schedule, check the soil first.

You can use a moisture meter, or just stick a screwdriver into the soil. If it's damp a few inches below the surface, wait and see how everything looks the following morning. Most plants will recover overnight if their roots have access to adequate moisture.

Mowing

Continue mowing high whenever you can. Taller grass shades the soil, reduces evaporation, and helps keep soil temperatures lower while creating a better environment for beneficial soil microbes.

If your lawn is soggy after rain, and/or the temperatures are extreme, it's perfectly fine to skip a mowing. A little patience benefits both your landscape and the life beneath it.

Below the Surface

Even when top growth slows, plenty is still happening below the surface. Roots continue growing where moisture is available. Microbes continue cycling nutrients, and organic matter continues breaking down. Those natural processes don't stop simply because the grass isn't growing as quickly as it did in May.
