Howdy Subscriber First Name, February can be confusing in the Houston area. We’re either hunkering down for a freeze or watching our plants consider budding because the afternoons reach 70 degrees. While that warmth can trigger a bit of top growth in turf or leaf buds, the soil itself is still cool, and most biological activity below ground remains slow. However, given the La Niña conditions out west, things may be a hair warmer (when not frozen) and a hair dryer than El Niño years. Either way, we need to be cautious, and let the soil rest and allow plants to develop roots without much disturbance. Try to mow and trim things as little as possible until March when things likely will truly start to warm. HOLD FAST - WE HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN YOU! Letting the soil rest and avoiding the urge to push growth too early sets the stage for stronger roots, healthier turf, and better resilience when spring truly arrives. And once those ground temperatures rise to the optimal temperature, generally in late February/early March, it is time for us to begin.
