May has rolled in, and things are starting to shift in a real way. April was cooler and wetter than we typically see, and even with the surprise cold fronts that blew through earlier this month, the warmth and humidity has quickly settled back in across the Houston area. Soil temperatures are rising, days are stretching out, and growth is picking up across the board, from turf and ornamentals to pastures and managed landscapes. That said, this kind of spring can be a little tricky. The extra rain and cooler nights helped ease everything into the season, but this pattern can also leave soils softer than usual and soil biology a step behind where it might normally be. Now, as temperatures climb, things are going to want to move quickly, and that includes not just plant growth, but also weeds, pests, and fungal pressure. Good news: we’ve been preparing for this. Through March and April, our focus was on waking up soil biology, improving structure, and building stronger root systems across the landscapes we manage. In May, we start to shift gears. Now we begin encouraging more visible top growth, but in a way that still works through the soil system we’ve been developing. That means introducing nitrogen. Not the quick-hit, fast-release approach of conventional fertilizers that ultimately leads to spikes and stress. Instead, we pair plant-available nitrogen with biology, carbon, and organic matter to support growth that’s more measured, resilient, and connected to what’s happening below ground. What that looks like across different landscapes: More consistent, even growth rather than sudden surges Stronger rooting in turf, beds, and broader soil profiles Better moisture management and stress tolerance as heat approaches Growth that holds up better under real-world conditions, such as foot traffic, weather, and use
You may not see an overnight transformation, but over the weeks following treatment, things should begin to come together in a noticeable and lasting way. We’re not just feeding plants. What we apply supports the entire soil system that the plants depend on. May is when the engine really starts turning. If the earlier part of the season was about setting the stage, this is where everything begins to grow into it, across landscapes of all sizes.
